Professional profile
Erika de Wet commenced as Professor of International Law and Head of the Institute of International Relations in the Faculty of Law at the University of Graz, Austria, in 2020. Since July 2015, she has also been Honorary Professor in the Faculty of Law at the University of Bonn, Germany.
Immediately before joining the University of Graz, she was the first South African Research Initiative (SARChI) Professor of International Constitutional Law in the Faculty of Law at the University of Pretoria, South Africa, from 2016 to 2019.
She obtained her B.Iur., LL.B. and LL.D. degrees from the University of the Free State, South Africa. She also holds an LL.M. from Harvard University and completed her Habilitationsschrift at the University of Zurich, Switzerland, in December 2002.
A revised version of her Habilitationsschrift, entitled The Chapter VII Powers of the United Nations Security Council, was subsequently published by Hart Publishing in 2004. This work has been widely cited, including by the European Court of Human Rights, the International Court of Justice, the International Criminal Court and the United Kingdom Supreme Court.
Since October 2020, Erika de Wet has served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Max Planck Yearbook of United Nations Law.
