Abstract and editorial note
The African Journal of Legal Studies is a peer-reviewed and interdisciplinary academic journal, which was founded by Professor Charles Jalloh and the Africa Law Institute and ran by him for many years before it was brought under CILPA and is now published separately by Brill Nijhoff, focuses on human rights and rule of law issues in Africa, drawing analysis from lawyers, economists, political scientists and scholars from across the continent and beyond.

AJLS places emphasis on diverse perspectives on fundamental, long-term and systemic problems of human rights and governance, as well as emerging issues and possible solutions. It encourages critical reflections based on empirical observation, experience and theoretical or multidisciplinary approaches. Although CILPA is no longer involved with AJLS, the Center recognises the role of its founder and supporters in establishing and running the journal for 20 years as one of the leading peer-reviewed journals on African legal issues, including international law questions.
CILPA publications support legal research, policy dialogue and African perspectives in international and regional law.
